Shifting Tides
Located in Eden Park, this project revolves around the concept of shifting and pulling geometric shapes to unveil new and unique spacial experiences. By incorporating a number of retractable doors and roofs, the design can seamlessly transition between season, offering a versatile space for both Summer and Winter activities. This elegant design not only introduces a new aquatic center to Cincinnati’s core, but also integrates various community spaces, ensuring that people of all ages can enjoy and utilize the facilities.
Upon diving into research on Eden Park, we observed a significant elevation difference between the upper basin housing Mirror Lake and our designated site below, formerly a water basin. Fascinated by this dramatic geological shift, we chose to focus on this idea for our concept. Seeking to create a better connection between these spaces, we began with two basic rectangular shapes—one positioned atop Mirror Lake and the other in the lower eastern basin. Through many iterations we manipulated these forms by shifting pieces of this mass to craft new unique space by the pieces that remain and were created as a result. The outcome became a sleek yet organized structure, where we integrated amenities such as pools and communal areas into the interstitial spaces.
Our objective was to craft a space that catered to diverse ages and backgrounds, ensuring everyone is able to experience the space. Whether you enjoyed swimming or not, our vision was to integrate this new structure as a piece of the city, inviting everyone to visit. Surrounded by natural beauty, we embraced the site's environment. To compliment the concrete of the building, we incorporated multiple green spaces, including a rooftop garden café. With multiple pools serving distinct purposes, individuals of all ages can relish the space. Families can delight in water slides and splash pads, while others can unwind in the main pool's shallow waters or engage in lap swimming. Recognizing the site's potential as a premier location in Cincinnati, our aim was for it to be celebrated and enjoyed by all.
Given this project is a public pool located in Cincinnati, We were presented with unique challenges due to the region's dynamic climate. Our primary focus was addressing accessibility throughout the year, particularly during the winter season. To tackle this challenge, we integrated a series of operable doors and a roof system capable of adjusting to different weather conditions. This adaptable design allows the pool to remain functional and inviting even during colder months, while offering a transformative experience in the summer with expansive open spaces.
